Outrage 02/18/09

Not but an hour after I finish setting up my Apple TV to use Hulu (see previous post) I check out my Google reader page and find out the Hulu is pulling its content off Boxee, the terminal I used with my ATV. According to Hulu they are being forced into this by content providers. While this may be true, I am still pissed: not just because I took the time to set it up, but because it is such a painfully obvious example of big media not seeing whats happening in the world around them.

To my point, the blog post announcing the change has already earned itself 70+ comments–all negative–since this afternoon. The quote that seems to capture my contempt for this whole affair is from a commenter named Dan Peterson

Wow, do these content providers really want to drive people to pirate their shows? Sure seems like it to me. I watch shows on my TV with my AppleTV via Boxee. I don’t want to watch them on my computer screen through a browser on Hulu.com. If you can’t easily watch things legally the vast majority of people are just going to keep (or go back to) pirating. What possible reason is there for not wanting their content on Boxee? I can’t think of a single even half-way good reason for this.

Hopefully they will take head of the massive outcry online and make a change.
